From mainframes to minis to PCs and PDAs, the InfoWorld Hall of Fame chooses the greatest, most enduring computer hardware of all time. Selections derive from the subjective experiences of staffers, contributors, and friends. The hall of famer products are those we generally took for granted as they propelled us to where we are today.
The following HP products have recently been inducted:
Digital Equipment Corp. PDP-11 (1970)-
This venerable line of minicomputers went through many permutations from its introduction in 1970 until its end-of-life in 1997. The PDP-11 declined in the 1980s, running up against its 16-bit limit as the cost of large memory fell.
Digital Equipment Corp. VAX (1977)-
The 32-bit successor to the DEC's PDP-11, the VAX line helped solidify DEC's position as the top minicomputer vendor. The VAX 11/780 introduced in 1977 was a 1-MIPS unit; dozens of iterations followed until VAX gave way to its DEC AlphaServer successors in the 1990s.
Compaq Deskpro 386 (1986)-
In 1986, it was Compaq, not IBM, that introduced the first 386 desktop computer. We recall those solidly built Deskpro 386s running well into the 1990s.
HP ProLiant DL360 G2 (2003)-
HP's DL360 line of 1U rackmount servers became ubiquitous shortly after their release. They offered a big bang for the buck and a small package. Armed with the very stable and easily managed SmartArray RAID controller and a wide variety of possible configurations, they became the Swiss Army knife of modern IT.

The IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing award was presented to HP on April 14, 2009 for the “Development of the HP-35, the first handheld scientific calculator” (which launched in Feb, 1972). The HP-35 was the world’s first handheld-sized scientific calculator. An instant hit, the HP-35 ultimately made the slide rule, which had previously been used by generations of engineers and scientists, obsolete. An IEEE Milestone plaque recording the award will be permanently displayed at HP Labs in Palo Alto, CA, the site where the HP-35 was originally developed.
IEEE established the Electrical Engineering Milestones program in 1983 to honor significant achievements in the history of electrical and electronics engineering. The awarded technologies must have stood the test of time. Currently, there are less than 100 IEEE milestones in existence around the world, among these include Benjamin Franklin’s work with electricity and Volta’s invention of the electrical battery.
